New Law Provides Tax Rebates
In February, President Bush signed into law an economic stimulus package providing tax rebates to many workers, including individuals whose incomes are too low to net any tax liability. Low-income workers, Social Security beneficiaries, and persons receiving monetary benefits from the Veteran’s Administration, who normally don’t file taxes due to their low incomes, may be eligible to receive a rebate. However, they must file a 2007 tax return. For additional information on the rebate and to determine eligibility please visit the IRS website on stimulus payments.
Residents of Puerto Rico will also receive tax rebates. Filing your 2007 tax return is the best way to ensure that the Treasury Department has your information as it begins to disburse the rebates. In Puerto Rico, implementation may vary from the mainland due to the differences in tax codes. The Commonwealth Treasury Department is collaboratively working with the U.S. Treasury to establish a timeframe similar to that of the IRS for the mainland.
Remember to file your 2007 taxes!
