Roberto Torres-Aguiar moved to central Florida to practice cardiology after payments for his patients in Puerto Rico, where unemployment hovers around 16 percent, became increasingly delinquent.

“It was becoming a nightmare to practice medicine in Puerto Rico,” said Torres-Aguiar, 56, who now lives in Orlando, about 230 miles (370 kilometers) north of Miami.

WASHINGTON DC (March 16) – With Puerto Rico’s unemployment rate now at 15.9 percent, the Chairman and President of the National Puerto Rican Coalition today commended the President’s Task Force on Puerto Rico’s Status for developing “a federal framework to restart economic development, establish competitive industries, and address the issue of Vieques.”

WHITE HOUSE TASKFORCE REPORT TO FOCUS ON PR ECONOMY; RELEASE SAID IMMINENT

The long-anticipated White House report on Puerto Rico’s political status and economy will be released this week, most likely Wednesday, CARIBBEAN BUSINESS sources say.

While the report will carry recommendations on the century-old status dilemma, the bulk of it will concern economic development and how Puerto Rico can benefit more fully from federal government programs and funding, the sources said.

Peaceful disagreement and dialogue are as welcome at the University of Puerto Rico as they are at any public institution in the rest of the United States. However, a small minority of student protestors at one of UPR's 11 campuses continues to conduct themselves with violence, attacking students, teachers and now the University Chancellor.

Washington, DC – The National Puerto Rican Coalition (NPRC) today condemned the violent attacks on University of Puerto Rico administrative personnel by demonstrators at the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras campus.
