

NHLA urges steps to fairly enforce immigration law following President Obama’s meeting with Hispanic leaders in Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Lillian Rodriguez-López, chair of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA), a coalition of the 30 leading Hispanic organizations in the United States, issued a statement following President Barack Obama’s meeting with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
Roberto Torres-Aguiar moved to central Florida to practice cardiology after payments for his patients in Puerto Rico, where unemployment hovers around 16 percent, became increasingly delinquent.
“It was becoming a nightmare to practice medicine in Puerto Rico,” said Torres-Aguiar, 56, who now lives in Orlando, about 230 miles (370 kilometers) north of Miami.

The long-anticipated White House report on Puerto Rico’s political status and economy will be released this week, most likely Wednesday, CARIBBEAN BUSINESS sources say.
While the report will carry recommendations on the century-old status dilemma, the bulk of it will concern economic development and how Puerto Rico can benefit more fully from federal government programs and funding, the sources said.
